What's that noise?

 

So I'm reading a thread on Ravelry, and someone referenced a video, YouTube, Liam, "You can't text-breakup," and instead of funny I find it vaguely disturbing.

Here lately I'm feeling "out of touch," or, "I'm too old for this!" After all, I'm almost 50 (Okay, first I have to finish being 48, then I'll be 49 for a year, then I'll be 50, but I'm young enough that, to my way of thinking, 48 might as well be 50! Figure that one out.), so some of what 20-somethings and 30-somethings are listening to and watching ...just doesn't work for me.

No, I'm not stuck in the Loretta Lynn / Glenn Campbell / Buddy Holly era (or Elvis <holds nose>); I have a couple Alanis Morisette CDs, some Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Skunk Anansie...

Truth is, I haven't been listening to music at all lately. My CDs, including the ones I just mentioned, are dusty. I am much more likely to turn the radio off when it's on than on when it's off. This could be due to the fact where I live there isn't a decent radio station besides NPR, and only about a quarter of the music NPR plays doesn't grate on my nerves.

So why don't I get satellite radio? 'Cause I'm a cheapskate. Why don't I listen to radio-on-the-computer? Too lazy to figure it out. It comes down to this: I'd just as soon listen to the baseboard heater clicking, my fingers on the keyboard, the chair squeaking, cats galloping around the house, birds outside singing. Music has ceased to be important to me.

How sad. Or is it?

Hours ago I found a "should I read this book?" request from a Shelfari member, and logged in to answer. While there I notice I only had listed 17 books (as books I'd read). Off to the races. I now have 372 books listed, and each one reminds me of half a dozen others I can add.

Time to do something else for a while.



OH YEAH: while we were out, I stopped in AC Moore --at th'Mr's suggestion (no, really! He said, "weren't you saying, on your blog (what, he reads my blog??), that you need a new circular needle, because you don't like the one you are using?") is he a good'un or what-- (did I just nest a couple pair of parentheses? How cool) ...and though I didn't find a #4 clover in a long circ, I did meet a Ravelry member (!) and at her suggestion bought a couple colors of a sock yarn I hadn't tried before.

Pix another time. My tail is sore from sitting at this desk cataloging my shelfari for so long. Go read that while you wait for me to come back.

All those ends go faster in company...

The Fair Isle socks are done. Last night at KCYC I finished the toe on the 2nd one, and tonight at East Tenapa (sp?) Mexican restaurant in Milton WV (a Ravelry meetup) I finished weaving in all the ends, and even knat another inch on my pentathlon gansey sox.

The meetup was cool! I hope I get a chance to do that again. I know next Thursday I'll be on my way home for a three-day weekend, but maybe another time.

On a less happy note, my next door neighbor (at the apartment, not at home), Beth, told me tonight her place is infested with RATS! She said they are big sewer rats, she saw them coming out of the woods, and they ate her couch. I immediately put my alpaca yarn in the freezer (oh, did I mention? Last night at KCYC I bought eight balls of Frog Tree alpaca to make a scarf I saw in one of the magazines --Knitter's, I think-- that has stripes which do a cool, open twist at the ends. I'll find a picture and post it soon.) I should probably put the cotton I bought last week (for a gansey sweater, did I forget to mention that too? Six hanks of a lovely blue and one of deep green (for swatching), and a pattern, and a #6 circular) in the freezer too. Th'Mr strongly suggested I get some DCon, but I can't justify killing rats for being what they are meant to be. He answered, "They're not meant to be roommates..."

I finished the first Jacobean sock! Soon as I get some pictures of it up here and on flickr I'll cast on the second one.

 



This is the first pattern in the "pentathlon," a Ravelry/Yahoo group called skp2008 (sock knitters' pentathlon) in which we will all attempt to knit 5 pair of sox during the Beijing Winter Olympics.

Now, with over a month to go, I'm halfway through the first pair. Yippee, I'm still in the race.
