This little cat thinks he's died and gone to cat heaven. We generally don't have a big turkey dinner on Thanksgiving, just whenever we're hungry for it.

T'giving dinner
Oh boy did we have a good dinner.
There were a couple of two-inch thick ribeye steaks prepared on th'grill by th'Mr...
I unimaginatively boiled a handful of potatoes (and then sprinkled them with MSG)...
Lacking fresh asparagus I opened a couple of cans of that...
Added frozen dinner rolls that had to rise for five hours first (that's a first for me, but not a last: they were GOOD)...
And green beans from an NPR recipe that once I was done unventing it went like this:
--------------------------------
in a small iron skillet on high heat chop and fry a large white onion,
slop a couple tablespoons canola oil in a(nother) medium iron skillet, heat well,
toss in two cans of cut (not french cut) green beans,
turn heat down to medium-high,
add a large pinch of salt,
toss with a spatula often,
add a couple cloves crushed garlic,
add a (2 oz) package slivered almonds,
stir in the onions,
eat.
--------------------------------
There's coffee ice cream, but so far neither of us has been especially interested in opening it, though I think I'm ready now.

Happy Holiday
Same three turkeys have hung around in the back yard all week. When I go outside they head for the woods, but they look less alarmed all the time. Winston was outside stalking them a little while ago. That was a funny sight.
The tom's limp is much less noticeable today.
We both think it's a good idea to buy some cracked corn (or something) to scatter in the yard for them. They're our guests, after all.
In a little while we're going to split some firewood. That'll probably send them walking majestically toward the woods again.

November punkin
Made a pumpkin pie today, well, two pies and a pile of fritters. Here's the recipe I used.
First I carved out my punkin and put all the meat I could scrape out in a big pot with a little water, and cooked it down.
So Hallowe'en's over, so what? Kitty looks good on the porch.

1 down, 55 to go
Next 3-day weekend is Labor Day, and if I'm not mistaken there are 8 6-day work weeks between now and then. Day one of six of week one of eight is done.
My weekend was great. I had joked that I intended to spend three days in a lawnchair with a drink in my hand, and that's pretty much what I did, though I did also give the garden a serious going-over (my never-ending fight with chickweed), pulled weeds out of the flowerbeds, sorted another three bags of discards out of my closet and th'Mr & I both played with the newest toy: a pressure washer. This morning he sent me a pic of the newly delivered siding (picture-phones are so cool), this afternoon he picked up scaffolding, and tomorrow his buddy JE comes in for a week to help re-side the house.
Trying to decide if I need to make a grocery store run tonight. I'm pretty comfortable, on the floor with my feet up on the couch...

birthday books
Finally got a "thank you" note sent off to Dad (th'Mr'Sr) for the bux he sent me my birthday in January (never mind EVerything was late, I mean everything from EVerybody and I celebrated opened gifts and cards a week after my actual birthday), and right after dropping that (the thank you to Dad) off at the Post Office I drove to Books-a-Million and spent it, plus twenty bux of my own. Photo of the loot follows.

short short weekend, long long week
Following one more Monday in January I didn't go to work (Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday), I returned Tuesday (after work) to the apartment to find icicles hanging out of the kitchen and bathroom faucets, a solid block of ice in the commode, and the shower hose broken off and lying in the shower stall.
Sigh.
This was not how I'd planned my Tuesday evening. I thought I'd grab a quick shower, then head to the KCYC for a little knitting companionship. Instead I'm off to the hardware store for a shower and a pair of channelocks (since my eleventeen pair are either at work or at home). By the time I got back to the apartment all was thawed and nothing broken, so I guess I got off easy.
Wednesday and Thursday must have been uneventful, as I don't remember them. Thursday night the temp dropped to 8 or lower, and Friday morning I let Astro-the-van warm up longer than normal. Then I drove to work. Arrived totally shivering, the van's heater was blowing only cold air. Thank the gods they keep the break room heater cranked up to eighty, and the 4/10ths mile walk in from the parking lot tends to warm me up too.
Friday evening I carried out tools for any eventuality and took US60 instead of the faster (but more dangerous) interstate, but Astro took me to the apartment without incident. One unexpected bonus came of driving the "back" road: I noticed a trusted chain auto parts store had a new sign up, proclaiming "now open 24 hours." I took down the phone number. No matter where I break down, I'll be able to call that number and find out what store is nearby. Smart, huh?
Saturday morning instead of letting the van warm up (not gonna happen with cold air blowing, anyway, right?) I cranked her up and put her in gear and drove right to work. If I'm going to blow a radiator hose apparently (judging by Friday's performance) it isn't going to happen in under an hour.
A lunchbox with all those tools AND lunch in it is heavy at 6:30AM.
Saturday afternoon --we only work eight hours on Saturdays-- I finally got a clue and checked the radiator for water. And added two and a half gallons. I'm so ashamed. But I am now home, 100 miles from work.
Still blowing cold air. Th'neighbor said he will replace the thermostat today.
Today's my birthday. Forty seven. I woke up at 6:30 (two hours after the alarm goes off during the week) and first thing drew a hot bath, lay in it reading for an hour. My apartment is adequate, but I do wish I had a tub there instead of just a shower stall.
Tomorrow I go back to work.
Sigh.

at the library tonight
First time I've been here in a while, since before Christmas. Tomorrow after work I head home for another three-day weekend. Tomorrow is an overtime day (time and a half all day), and Monday is not an official holiday, but my own personal policy is I don't work on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday. I also don't work on Labor Day, my birthday, my husband's birthday, or our anniversary. The rest I'll work if they'll pay overtime for them :)
Had two nice knit nights this week: Tuesday and Wednesday at KCYC. I'm within ten rows of finishing the back of Aranmor. I'll work both sleeves at once (thanks, Steve, for the suggestion). That's really all I have to say. Just wanted to check in after not blogging for a few days.

you say you want a resolution
Happy New Year :)
Well, almost. I wrote these down earlier this week and want to go ahead and transcribe them to the blog...
NYR#1: slow down
NYR#2: shut up
NYR#3: take time
NYR#4: drive safely(er)
NYR#5: go to work
NYR#6: don't overschedule
NYR#7: family time
NYR#8: maintenance
NYR#9: break bad habits
NYR#1: slow down
if I leave home 20 minutes later than I ought to, I will not run 80mph to try to make it to work on time (though it works), but will just face the fact that I'll be late. A 20-y-o van ought not have to work so hard just to save me ½ hours' pay.
NYR#2: shut up
if I don't have something nice to say, I shouldn't say anything, unless it's really necessary. Did pretty good in 2007 curbing the urge to blab my business; let's do even better this year. Not necessary to share my opinions on every subject.
NYR#3: take time
there may not be enough time in the day to do everything I want to. Multitasking is fine in some areas but texting while driving is a no-no. I may not be able to do everything I want to every day. Prioritize. Enough sleep is #1 necessity.
NYR#4: drive safely(er)
did good in 2007 wearing seatbelt 99% of the time; make it 100%. Slow down. Driving is not something multitaskable. Remove distractions and temptations. Practice pulling over to attend to other business. Fix what's wrong with the van right away (lights, wipers) when it first goes wrong. Wash the van at least monthly.
NYR#5: go to work
if tempted to take the day off work, go ahead and indulge the fantasy for five minutes, then get up and go to work. Schedule time off ahead of time, as necessary to take care of other business, including rest. Don't get mad & leave early without a really really good reason.
NYR#6: don't overschedule
there are only so many hours in a day. Don't fill them all up with plans. Although I may want to knit socks for a dozen people, I don't have time to. Make leisure time important. Reduce stress by reducing obligations.
NYR#7: family time
did good in 2007 phoning parents every weekend, now start writing to other family members. Try to schedule a letter per week.
NYR#8: maintenance
take care of my stuff: oil my boots, wash the van, fix things when they need it. Good rule of thumb is, if I'd be embarrassed to lend it out, then it needs maintenance.
NYR#9: break bad habits
stop chewing fingernails

I'm pretty sure I have a knitting-related injury.
Not too long ago I successfully sped up my knitting with a swiveling motion of my left hand that, each stitch, put the yarn over the right-hand needle.
A while later I noticed my left arm felt injured, that, for instance, if I was sitting in the chairtrap and reached out to open the sliding glass door for one of the animals I got an intense pain in my upper arm, around the top muscle (whatever that one's called).
I think these things are related.
This week, once the last-minute Christmas knitting rush was complete (and I won't be doing that again), I've done almost no knitting.
My arm feels better.
I think it's time to slow down, read more, get back into cross-stitching... reintroduce some variety.

Happy Holidays; here's how mine were spent...
Two five-day weekends in a row.
Last Thursday I came home, we left Saturday for Muncie, had a real nice Christmas with all th'Mr's family (Saturday was great traveling weather - temperate, and not much traffic at all; Sunday and Monday were ice cold, windy, snowy; and Tuesday was again great traveling weather), drove home Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning I went back to work.
Sometime Wednesday afternoon I realized I'd neglected to bring the apartment keys with me, so Wednesday night I drove home again and Thursday again made the 200-mile round trip to Charleston, but now I'm home again for the weekend.
After work yesterday I went to the apartment to pick up a few things, most notably the Christmas ham AEP had given out. The bird feeders were dead empty, and I keep the birdseed in the freezer (there's no good reason not to: if there are mice it'll keep them out and there's really not another good spot to keep a big bag of seed in that small apartment), or I'd never noticed the power had apparently been out while I was away. Three pounds of bacon and another three of hamburger were completely thawed, and though there were some small chunks of ice cubes left in the big container I dump the ice trays into they were in a big pool of water.
The uncharitable thought that comes to mind is the neighbor (or whoever it was that came in over Thanksgiving weekend and drank cokes, moved the liquor bottles, used a huge glop of electricity and took an unopened bag of Hershey's cherry cordials), on discovering his key no longer unlocks my door, turned off my power for spite (since it was probable I would be gone all weekend). The electric panel is in the "basement" under the apartment, to which the neighbors have access.
Some more charitable (and less paranoid) thoughts are simply there was a power outage, or the freezer malfunctioned, or the breaker controlling the fridge was accidentally shut off for a while.
Last night on the way home I stopped at Target and filled th'Mr's Christmas list --yeah, I know it's late, but why risk duplicating what someone else got him, this is a better way to do it-- and this morning before he got out of bed I wrapped all the loot.
In Muncie we stay at th'MrSr's house and Christmas morning we go to Sis's place for a big breakfast and all the unwrapping. Before noon we were headed back home, and on the way home I started craving Christmas dinner (note above; we had breakfast, not dinner at Sis's), but not even Shoney's was open Tuesday, so today I'm fixing a turkey, stuffing, potatoes, green bean casserole, asparagus and anything else I can find in the cabinets (or send him after). The turkey, an 18-pound Butterball, is now nearly thawed, giblets and neck are simmering and most of the other stuff is ready to go in the oven when it's time.
Th'Mr has taken Astro to get my snowtires balanced, and I'm taking this brief break from kitchen to catch up on this most necessary blogging.
Take care.

Home again, home again, jiggety jig...
Finally got home last night, after almost three weeks away. This schedule depresses me, not least because after all that time away, after paying bills & such I end up with near zero bux in the bank.
Astro still coughs and chokes - maybe he needs a fuel filter? but now has two new snow tires on the rear, a gift from a co-worker. Sort of a gift. When I tried to pay for them he told me to wait till I could afford to. At this rate that could be a while.
Since last I blogged, I rediscovered the yarn shop in Kanawha City and have visited several times. Saturday they're open till five, and if I work Saturdays it's only till 3:30, so I got in a couple of hours knitting in the company of other knitters before heading to the apartment where th'Mr had arrived for another weekend.
Aranmor has been put on hold while I knat up a pair of fingerless gloves for Mom's birthday and housesox for Dad's Christmas. Now I'm 3/4 through with a scarf for the brother-in-law and plan to crochet a bear, fishing, for the other BiL before making th'Mr's requested housesox. Then I can get back to Aranmor, and to the worksox I've been wanting for myself.
I'm not in a very good mood. I don't like December. It's dark, and cold, and often wet, and traffic is nuts and everyone's in a hurry and the commercialization of Christmas drives me batshit (and like it or not, I get caught up in it too), and I never feel like my gifts to others are adequate and all this nifty stuff I'd like goes on sale but I don't buy for myself because I figure someone will gift me with the same thing (which never happens). January's just as bad with my birthday at the end of it, but this year by gawd I'm going to get myself something neat for my birthday.
Tomorrow we drive north for the holiday. Tuesday we'll drive back home, and Wednesday morning I'll head back to WV to work for two days, THEN I'll have a four-day weekend at home. I like the relatives and like seeing them on holidays or any time, but what I'd really like to do is just come home and hibernate, covered in cats, for a few weeks. I feel like I need healing.

next comes Monday
Well, I've been real involved with Ravelry this weekend, almost to the exclusion of all else. Knit on Aranmor some, knit on the Modular some (the kid's birthday is this week; guess that'll be a Christmas present... what do three-year-olds care about birthdays, anyway?), helped th'Mr get some firewood split & stacked, did a couple loads of laundry, but honestly, my butt's numb from sitting here so much of the last couple days. And I'm all guilted out about the Modular thing. And about not blogging more. And I didn't cook a thing all weekend! That ought to guilt me all by itself.
Tomorrow's supposed to be cold --ten degrees colder here than at work-- so now I'm itching to throw everything aside and cast on either the Thermal or some heavy socks. For me.
Need. Socks. Knit faster! And get your numb butt out of that chair.

It's snowing
First snow of the season. Wednesday and Thursday we had a high/low of mid-seventies/upper-forties.
Yesterday --Thanksgiving-- we did nontraditionally. Since I didn't know till the last minute if I'd be working any of the four-day weekend (I'm not, none of it) th'Mr didn't get a turkey. We both agree I can (and do!) bake a turkey any time, not just on holidays, so he decided he'd like to do a couple nice steaks on the grill. Our Thanksgiving dinner was:
New York Strip Steak
Steamed Asparagus
Green Bean Casserole
Stuffing
Strawberry Cheesecake
Today I need to take Astro to the car shop for a tune up - she's chugging and gasping - and we need to get groceries (last night the dog ate catfood and the cats ate tuna). But right now I'm going to sit here and watch it snow.
