Although I'm knitting both at once (not "Magic Trick," mind you, but first a little on one, then a little on the other) and I can keep up, more or less, with what I'm doing, if I ever want to do it again I'd better keep track of what I'm doing. So here it is, so far...
CO 72 on US 1 needles
two inches 2 x 2 ribbing
begin pattern:
row 1 & every odd row: k7 p2
row 2: k5 [k2tog leaving on left needle, k into first of those two, slip both loops off left needle; twist made] p2
row 4: k4 [repeat twist] k1 p2
row 6: k3 [repeat twist] k2 p2
row 8: k2 [repeat twist] k3 p2
row 10: k1 [repeat twist] k4 p2
row 12: [repeat twist] k5 p2
these twelve rows are one pattern repeat.
work five pattern repeats, with the 2" ribbing sock is now 8" from cast-on edge.
divide for heel: keep 36 instep stitches, 36 heel stitches
heel flap:
purl across ws of 36 heel stitches, then...
row 1 & every odd row: *slip 1, k1, repeat from * across
row 2 & every even row: slip 1, purl across
work 3", about 40 rows.
turn heel:
switch to US #0 needles
I like (an idea I read on some list archive - sorry, I don't remember what list it was, but I do remember it was a man posting his way of knitting socks) to divide the heel stitches into three sets --left, middle, right-- not actually physically divide, but visualize it in my mind, and then turn the heel by stitching one of the outside sets to the middle set each row. On my 36-stitch heel flap it worked like this:
slip 1, k22, k2tog, k1 (25 sts on left needle, 10 sts on right), turn
slip 1, p11, p2tog, p1 (10 + 14 sts on left needle, 10 sts on right), turn
slip 1, k12, k2tog, k1 (10 + 15 sts on left needle, 8 sts on right), turn
slip 1, p13, p2tog, p1 (8 + 16 sts on left needle, 8 sts on right), turn
slip 1, k14, k2tog, k1 (8 + 17 sts on left needle, 6 sts on right), turn
slip 1, p15, p2tog, p1 (6 + 18 sts on left needle, 6 sts on right), turn
slip 1, k16, k2tog, k1 (6 + 19 sts on left needle, 4 sts on right), turn
slip 1, p17, p2tog, p1 (4 + 20 sts on left needle, 4 sts on right), turn
slip 1, k18, k2tog, k1 (4 + 21 sts on left needle, 2 sts on right), turn
slip 1, p19, p2tog, p1 (2 + 22 sts on left needle, 2 sts on right), turn
slip 1, k20, k2tog, k1 (2 + 23 sts on left needle, none on right), turn
slip 1, p21, p2tog, p1 (24 sts), turn,
slip 1, k23
I had to lay 36 dimes on my desk in three sets of twelve, to represent the stitches, and stack the k2togs, and even so I messed it up once
then, once the heel was turned (on both socks, mind you), I switched back to US #1 needles, then picked up 24 gusset stitches down the left side, knit in pattern on the instep, picked up 24 on the right and divided the 24 remaining heel sts with my gussets, so now the needles are 36 - 36 - 36.
I worked in pattern two more rows then began decreases every other row, so that I'm decreasing on needles 1 & 3 while n2 does a k7 p2 row. I plan to do a few rows of ribbing on the sole, but not yet.
