Toe up!

Toe-up sox in Wool-Ease Chunky

This is my first attempt at toe-up socks, also my first attempt at doubleknitting two socks, one inside the other.

using Judy Becker's painless cast-on:

CO 8 onto each of two needles, for a total of 16 sts.
Knit one round, then k1 m1 k6 m1 k1 on both needles, then knit another round.

Redistribute to four needles, repeat the last two rounds till there are 8 sts on each needle, for a total of 32.

CO the second sock and catch up with the first. Change color.
(note: learn a better method of m1 than yo)

Ahhhh
rip out both socktoes.

What I want to do here is work both socks at once, toe-up, doubleknit method. This first bit wasn't in vain, though; I learned that 20 sts around is probably sufficient. 32 would have left me with something feltable...

So, begin again, using JB's caston, casting 6 onto each needle. CO onto circ before switching to my preferred dpn

Rip again. Do toe increases before integrating stitches, sooooo...

The bright side is, I've gotten so good at Judy's cast on that I don't need no stinkin' circular.

Let's make that a total of 24.

Let's remember that when knitting the first round, the stitches on the second needle get knit into the back.

Mutter "fuck" with each tink.

Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck.

Tug the tail at the end of each round, making sure this _is_ the end and not the middle...

Make 1, a la knittingatknoon, ...knit, slip under front, knit through back, knit knit knit knit, slip under back, knit through front, knit. Turn. Tug tail.

Round six, increases to 24 sts, now rd 7... deep breath... cram one toe inside the other. Tug tails. Admire the four shiny needles all in a row. Dash in fear to the kitchen, hide behind wine bottle. Eat chocolate, drink wine. Cautiously approach the nested toes, armed with wine & crackers...

Now redistribute the stitches. I moved one stitch at a time onto a new needle, first the "inside" sock, then the outside. Tried to knit them on but decided --at least for the first attempt-- that just slipping was painful enough.

Now knit, a la Kory Stamper's article, beginning with the text right above the three photos lined up together. It says, "You'll have finished the cast-on with a B stitch and the first stitch you will knit will be an A stitch, knit with the A yarn."

A yarn to back, knit A, A yarn to front, knit B, A yarn to back, knit A, A yarn to front, knit B,

HEY! I can do this, I think! Don't interrupt me...

Howdy! I got here from the DKlist. Brave soul to learn to knit socks toe-up and DK them at the same time!

I wrote a few blog posts on how to DK socks from the toe-up; I don't have permalinks to the entries because of the blog program I use, but visit and click the "double-knit" link at the top. You'll see a whole bunch of variations to try.
