This just might work. The dowel was 36", thus yielded four 9" dpns. A cheap plastic pencil sharpener does fine for the rough shaping, though the angle isn't quite right. I'm using coarse sandpaper to fine tune and smooth. Then what... olive oil? Furniture polish?

Finer grades of sandpaper, right down to the "micron abrasive film". Then maybe salad bowl finish. I love the micro abrasive film! I stumbled over it at Michaels (the craft store chain), but I've been told that glass & mirror places (the kind that cut glass) and car refinishers are supposed to use it and might have scraps. Haven't gotten brave and called any, though.
Alwen, I am sorry! So rude of me not to reply till now. My plan was to go to the local glass shop and ask if they had any, then report back to you. But I haven't been to the glass place yet. If I do, and they do, I'll get enough to share :)
